How Do You Try Us Out?

We want an opportunity to get to know you a little and of course, to get to know your voice. We are not expecting that you have much experience singing in a small ensemble or that you have taken voice lessons. In fact, you don't even have to know how to read music—really! We are looking for a clear voice that will blend well with other boys' voices, the ability to sing on pitch and to "hold your own" when singing.

Most auditions are very informal. We would like to have you come to join a rehearsal from start to end. When we take a break or at the end, we will give you an opportunity (without everyone else listening) to sing a few scales, just so we can get a good idea about the range of your voice.

When the rehearsal is over, we'll visit with you and your adult for a few minutes.

That's it! Nothing scary, nothing to create a lot of stress--just have a good time singing with us, decide whether you will enjoy rehearsing and performing with us, and singing the sort of music we perform.

Now, here are answers for some of the quesitons we didn't already cover.

  • Do I have to sing "solo" in front of "everybody"?

Nope (unless you want to, of course): just the Choir director, the assistant director and the Choir's accompanist. (And, if you wish, your parent, of course.) Eventually, you will develop the confidence to sing for others, but that can wait until later.

  • But, I can't sing "high". Isn't that important?

A lot of people think that boy choirs are made up of only boy sopranos. Hey, not everybody sings the high treble part. If they did, it would sound a bit strange. (For that matter, not everybody can sing the lower parts.) One reason for the audition is to discover which part you sing naturally. We will teach you techniques that will help you develop your talents. You will probably be surprised at what you can do.

  • Umm, I don't read music very well (in fact, not at all).

Well, that will make singing with the ensemble a bit more challenging at first, but it is not a big problem: you'll learn quickly what you need to know! If you are willing to make the effort, we can teach you what you will need and you will be reading like a maestro in no time.

  • What if I don't play piano or any other instrument?

This is a choir, not a band or orchestra. You need to be able to sing. If you play an instrument, you may get a chance to help accompany the Choir from time to time (and that will always be up to you, in any case). By the way, if you do play a musical instrument, you are invited to bring it along to the audition.
